A Goodbye

My first VR Project, a step into a new realm.

The following project not only started the new chapter of my master’s degree but also triggered my first interest turned skill of level and environment design.

The environment

Details

  • My goal was to switch up the task of creating an escape room, as I wanted to create a more open environment.

Then I came up with the idea of creating a small village, in a rural Japanese type of style and designing that brought me the greatest joy in this project.

  • The premise was, that the players needed to collect their grandma’s belongings and offer them to a shrine in order to correctly say goodbye to their recently passed grandmother.

This aspect of the game taught me the importance of research when wanting to create an environment that is true to real life.

  • The development process presented itself to be a lot more challenging than previously anticipated, as various factors influence the players’ experience, such as motion sickness.

In order to work around this infamous problem in VR, clipping issues had to be resolved, and two transportation methods were integrated.

Overall, the development process was a lot more finicky than 3D or 2D game development, but the challenges were overcome, and I gained experience in VR development.

  • The game was developed with Unity, wwise, and the VRTK package.
